Ibadah puasa merupakan sarana latihan untuk pengembangan diri. Ulama
besar dunia, Yusuf al-Qaradhawi, dalam bukunya Fiqh al-Shiyam,
memandang puasa Ramadhan sebagai lembaga pendidikan par-excellent
(madrasah mutamayyizah) yang dibuka oleh Allah SWT setiap tahun. Siapa
yang mendaftar dan mengikuti "perkuliahan" dengan baik sesuai petunjuk
Islam, ia akan lulus ujian dengan predikat "sukses besar". Karena, tak
ada keuntungan yang lebih besar ketimbang meraih ampunan Tuhan dan
bebas dari siksa neraka.
Di antara hikmah paling penting ibadah puasa, bagi al-Qaradhawi,
adalah pencucian atau peningkatan kualitas diri (tazkiyyat al-nafs).
Puasa diharapkan dapat meninggikan kualitas jiwa dan mentalitas
manusia sehingga ia menjadi manusia yang benar-benar tunduk dan
menghambakan diri hanya kepada Allah SWT. Inilah potret manusia
bertakwa yang ingin dicapai melalui ibadah puasa.
Dalam pemikiran Islam, jiwa atau mental (al-nafs) memiliki empat
tingkatan mulai dari yang paling rendah hingga paling tinggi. Pertama,
mental tumbuh-tumbuhan (nafs al-nabat). Wilayah kerja (domain) mental
tumbuh-tumbuhan adalah makan dan minum. Manusia dengan mental ini
tentu tidak dapat menjalankan ibadah puasa.
Kedua, jiwa binatang (nafs al-hayawan). Domain jiwa binatang adalah
gerak, harakah (motion), memangsa, dan seksualitas. Jiwa binatang
tidak mengenal rambu-rambu hukum. Yang kuat memangsa dan menerkam yang
lemah. Inilah yang dinamakan hukum rimba. Manusia dengan mental ini
juga tak dapat melaksanakan ibadah puasa.
Ketiga, jiwa manusia (nafs al-insan). Domain jiwa manusia adalah
berpikir dan berprestasi. Jiwa ini jauh lebih tinggi dari dua jiwa
terdahulu. Tapi, bukan tanpa kelemahan. Dalam berpikir dan mencapai
prestasi, jiwa manusia sering diliputi penyakit sombong (kibr),
serakah (al-thama`), serta dengki (al-hasad), dan iri hati (al-hiqd wa
al-hasad).
Keempat, jiwa atau mental malaikat (nafs al-malakut). Domain mental
ini adalah kebenaran dan kepatuhan yang tinggi kepada Allah SWT tanpa
reserve. "Penjaganya ialah malaikat-malaikat yang kasar, keras, dan
tidak mendurhakai Allah terhadap apa yang diperintahkan-Nya kepada
mereka dan selalu mengerjakan apa yang diperintahkan." (QS Al-Tahrim
[66]: 6).
Mental malakut, seperti dipaparkan di atas, merupakan mental yang
paling tinggi. Ibadah puasa sesungguhnya dimaksudkan agar manusia
memiliki semangat dan jiwa malakut ini. Ini tidak bermakna bahwa
manusia harus bertransformasi (merubah bentuknya) menjadi malaikat.
Tidak. Tapi, transformasi dalam arti peningkatan kualitas diri dengan
semangat kebenaran (tahaqquq) dan pengabdian (ta`abbud) yang tinggi
kepada Allah SWT. Wallahu a`lam.
