Chu shared the 1997 Nobel Prize in physics and is a former chairman of the physics department at Stanford University in California and head of the electronics research laboratory at Bell Labs.
The announcement will not be announced officially this week.
Obama also will name Lisa Jackson, currently a New Jersey environmental official, as EPA administrator and Carol Browner, a former Environmental Protection Agency Administrator, as energy "czar" reporting to the President.
Whether Browner's position will be a cabinet-level appointment is not clear, NBC said.

The Lawrence Berkeley Web site says Chu was an early advocate for finding scientific solutions to climate change and has guided the laboratory on a new mission to become the world leader in alternative and renewable energy research, particularly the development of carbon-neutral sources of energy.
That experience will be useful as the next energy secretary, as Obama wants to spend billions of dollars to promote alternative energy sources and create millions of green energy jobs.
A spokesman for the Lawrence Berkeley laboratory offered no comment on the prospect of Chu becoming the next energy secretary. Chu is traveling abroad in Asia and Europe and will be back at work on Monday, he said.
Chu will have to work closely with a new White House council that would coordinate energy and climate policy among the various federal agencies.
Browner, a principal at global strategy firm The Albright Group, heads Obama's advisory team on energy and the environment.

Profession
Scientist
Steven Chu (born February 28, 1948)[1] is an American experimental physicist. He is known for his research in laser cooling and trapping of atoms, which won him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1997.[1] His current research is concerned primarily with the study of biological systems at the single molecule level. He is currently Professor of Physics and Molecular and Cellular Biology of University of California, Berkeley and the director of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. As global warming warnings grow more dire, Chu is currently pushing his scientists at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and industry to develop technologies to reduce the impact of climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Chief in Chu's campaign is an unprecedented research pact reached between UC Berkeley, oil industry giant BP, the Lawrence Berkeley Lab and the University of Illinois, which has drawn considerable controversy. Nearly US$400 million in new lab
space will expand energy-related molecular work centered at Lawrence Berkeley that involves partners around the world; a US$160 million Energy Biosciences Institute helios building is to be funded by BP and subsidized with $70 million of California state funds, house up to 50 BP scientists in a private lab, and will include Chu's separate solar-energy program, but is reportedly on hold due to problems with the approved Environmental Impact Review.[2] According to MSNBC and other media outlets, he is President-elect Barack Obama's choice for Secretary of Energy.[3]
Chu is an early signatory to Project Steve, an educational campaign supporting the conventional scientific understanding of evolution.[10]
Project Steve
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search
Project Steve is a list of scientists with the given name Stephen or a variation thereof (e.g., Stephanie, Stefan, Esteban, etc.) who "support evolution". It was originally created by the National Center for Science Education as a "tongue-in-cheek parody" of creationist attempts to collect a list of scientists who "doubt evolution," such as the Answers in Genesis' list of scientists who accept the biblical account of Creation according to Genesis[1] or the Discovery Institute's A Scientific Dissent From Darwinism. The list pokes fun at such endeavors in a "light-hearted" manner to make it clear that, "We did not wish to mislead the public into thinking that scientific issues are decided by who has the longer list of scientists!"[2]
However, at the same time the project is a genuine collection of scientists.. Despite the list's restriction to only scientists with names like "Steve", which in the United States limits the list to roughly 1 percent of the total population,[3] Project Steve is longer and contains many more eminent scientists than any creationist list. In particular, Project Steve contains many more biologists than the creationist lists, since about 2/3 of the Steves are biologists.[ 4]
The "Steve-o-meter" webpage provides an updated total of scientist "Steves" that have signed the list. The Steve-o-meter registered 987 Steves as of December 9, 2008.[5]

Pembuangan dan Penanganan Bahan Kimia Tumpahan di Laboratorium
Oleh Yoky Edy Saputra
Alumni Jurusan Kimia FMIPA Universitas Andalas Padang
memperhatikan masalah ketelitian analisa saja.
langsung melalui bak pembuangan limbah laboratorium.
Kemudian cairannya
dinetralkan dan dibuang.

Cara baru pendeteksian bahan peledak
Oleh Chandra Wahyu Purnomo
Dosen Kimia FT Kimia UGM
bahan awal (precursor), sehingga bom peroksida biasanya masih
mengandung bahan kimia diatas.
mahal.

[artikel chem-is-try.org] Pengukuran Tekanan dalam Ukuran Nano

Pengukuran Tekanan dalam Ukuran Nano
Oleh Amsal Sihombing
Para peneliti di National Institute of Standards and Technology
(NIST) telah mendemonstrasikan kemampuan mereka untuk mengukur
tegangan tingkat rendah di permukaan seluas hanya 10 nanometer di
permukaan semikonduktor.
