More new babies named Mohammed than George in Britain Thu Dec 21, 5:30 PM ET
LONDON (AFP) - Mohammed or Muhammad has overtaken George near the top of the
list of most popular names for newborn babies in Britain, according to
statistics Thursday, reflecting the ethnic mix of the population.
The Office for National Statistics said there were 2,833 baby boys called
Mohammed in 2006, with a further 1,422 Muhammads making a total of 4,255,
exceeding the number of Georges (3,386) and Josephs (3,755).
Mohammed is the 22nd most popular name for a newborn baby, while the spelling
Muhammad is 44th and enters the top 50 for the first time.
Jack remains the most popular boys' name for a 12th straight year, ahead of
Thomas and Joshua, but Olivia has dethroned last year's girls' number one
Jessica, which is now third behind Grace.
As usual, celebrity-linked names were in evidence on the list.
There were 38 babies called Cruz, like the Spanish-born son of pin-up former
England football captain David Beckham, raising the name from 1,508th to 650th
in the boys' list.
Meanwhile there were 14 Peaches, as in the wildchild teenage daughter of
activist Bob Geldof, raising the name around 3,000 places to 1,561st in the
girls' list.
Preston moved up 767 places to 148 in the boys' list. Its rise is probably due
to a contestant in a British reality television show and US pop singer Britney
Spears' baby Sean Preston, rather than the former cotton mill city in northwest
England, home of Britain's largest bus station.
Louis, Brandon, Toby, Kieran and Charles all dropped out of the boys' top 50, as
did Libby, Aimee and Niamh in the girls' list.
